Only platinum Mining , Transport (taxis), Informal trade
of agricultural produce and the supply of goats to Gauteng
for traditional rituals generate external revenues. Mining
dwarfs the rest. However, lead firms in these sectors have
proven their competitiveness by trading profitably in
external markets.
The transport sector relies mainly on proximity to local
customers for competitive advantage. Mining competitive
advantage is more robust due to rich platinum deposits
close to surface, a smelter close by and linkages to
international value chains.
