Socio Economic Indicators

The Limpopo Spatial Rationale, 2002, indicates a total population figure of 99 712 for the Fetakgomo Municipal Area in the year 2001. Statistics South Africa estimated the population of the municipal area at 92 083 in 2001.

In general, Fetakgomo is perceived as being a deprived municipality, heavily reliant on public sector employment (34 per cent of all employment), remittances and social grants. The average annual household income for Fetakgomo is R 8,000 per annum and almost one third of all households report that they are earning no income.

The 2001 Census results indicate that the average annual individual income of the population in the Fetakgomo area is very low. Chart D-D.4 below clearly reflects the extent of poverty in the Fetakgomo area in terms of an overall annual individual income profile. 73.4% of the population does not have any income, while only 0.41% of the population has an average income of more than R12801 per year.

The minimum subsistence income (breadline) for households to survive in Limpopo is considered to be R15 600 per year or R1 300 per month. Chart D-D.5 below indicates that approximately 86% of households in Fetakgomo lives under the breadline, i.e. earns less than R15 600 per year. Should this persist, this reality implies that approximately 86% of households will currently be unable to pay user charges for municipal services.

Table D-D.6 and Chart D-D.2 indicate the education level for the municipal area expressed as a percentage of the total municipal population. The figures reflect low levels of senior education qualifications and high levels of illiteracy.
